Decks built for wet coast winters

We build composite, vinyl and cedar decks, aluminum and glass railings, and covered patios that let you use the yard from October to April.

Two-tone composite deck: mitred picture-frame border and double wrap-around steps. Port Coquitlam.

Rain is the deciding factor for decks here. We favour composite decking and vinyl membranes because they don't rot, and we pay attention to the parts that fail first on the coast: ledger flashing, joist tape, footing drainage and ventilation underneath. A patio cover over the deck or patio extends the season more than anything else you can add.

Raised decks and covered structures usually need a building permit. We'll tell you at the site visit what your project needs and handle the drawings and inspections.

Very happy with my new deck. It took only a week for Gareth and his crew to show up to do the job and they finished the 18 x 14 deck in only 1 day and half morning. Impressive considering this included demolition of previous old rotten deck and installation of the foundations for the new one. They did a good quality job with very generous number of joists for a solid deck.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a permit for a deck in Coquitlam?

Many decks need one, especially raised decks and covered structures. Requirements depend on height, size and attachment to the house. We confirm this for your project and handle the permit when required.

Composite or cedar?

Composite costs more up front but doesn't need staining and won't rot, which matters in our climate. Cedar is warmer and cheaper initially but needs regular maintenance.

Can you build a cover over an existing deck?

Often, yes, if the deck framing can carry the load. We'll check the structure first.

Do you do deck repair?

Yes. Deck repair includes replacing rotten joists, boards and stairs, re-flashing ledgers and fixing railings. If the framing is sound, we can also resurface an old deck with composite.
