How much does a retaining wall cost in Coquitlam?

What actually drives the price, from the Coquitlam crew that builds this work. Updated October 2026.

Two-tier segmental block retaining wall with built-in block steps and new sod lawn, Burnaby
Two-tier block retaining wall with built-in steps and new sod. Burnaby.

Short answer: There's no honest flat price for a retaining wall, because two walls the same length can be very different jobs. The cost comes down to the wall type, the height (walls over 1.2 m in Coquitlam need a permit and an engineer), the drainage behind it, access for equipment and what's in the ground. We give a written price for the agreed scope after a free site visit, so you know the full cost before any work starts.

Your options compared

Wall typeGood forLifespan and upkeep
Pressure-treated timberShort garden walls and lower-budget jobsLowest upfront cost, but rots in our wet climate. Plan on replacing it in 15 to 20 years.
Concrete block (segmental)Most backyard walls, curves and stepsLasts decades with no maintenance when built on a proper base with drainage.
Natural stone or boulderNatural look on slopes and ravine lotsVery long-lasting. Price depends heavily on stone and machine access.
Poured concreteTall, structural and property-line wallsThe strongest option. Often engineered; forming and curing add time.

What changes the price

  1. Height and permits

Under 1.2 m (4 ft) in Coquitlam needs no building permit. Over that, the City requires a permit and an engineered design, and no single wall can be taller than 2.4 m (8 ft). Terracing into two shorter walls can sometimes keep each tier under the threshold.

  2. Drainage behind the wall

Every wall we build gets clear drain rock and a perforated drain pipe behind it. Water pressure is the number one reason walls lean and fail in our climate, so it's built into every wall we build.

  3. Access

If a mini-excavator can reach the work, the job goes faster. Tight side yards mean moving soil and block by hand.

  4. Removing the old wall

Tearing out a rotten timber wall and hauling it away is part of many jobs and is priced into the estimate.

  5. Soil and slope

Clay, rock, or a steep slope behind the wall means more excavation and a deeper base.

Common questions

What's the cheapest type of retaining wall?

Pressure-treated timber has the lowest upfront cost, but it rots in our wet climate and usually needs replacing in 15 to 20 years. Concrete block costs more at the start but lasts decades, so it's often cheaper over the life of the wall.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Coquitlam?

Walls under 1.2 m (about 4 ft) don't need a building permit but must still meet City bylaws and the BC Building Code. Walls over 1.2 m need a building permit and an engineered design. No wall can exceed 2.4 m, and walls over 0.6 m should have a guard or fence on top.

Why won't you give a price over the phone?

Because the things that drive the price, like height, soil, drainage and access, can only be judged on site. A phone number would be a guess. A site visit gets you a written price for the agreed scope you can actually budget on.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

A typical backyard block wall takes a few days. Engineered and poured concrete walls take longer because of forming, inspections and curing.

Is the site visit really free?

Yes. We come out, measure, look at slope and drainage, and send you a written estimate with the wall type, height, drainage and base depth spelled out.
